FC Viktoria Berlin wrapped up the season on a high note with a composed 2-0 (1-0) away win at 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam. In front of 917 spectators at Karl-Liebknecht-Stadion, under slightly cloudy skies and 18-degree weather, coach Miren Ćatović’s team delivered a focused performance and rewarded themselves with three points to close out the season.
The starting point for the two teams was quite different: While Potsdam was still mathematically fighting to avoid relegation heading into the matchday, Viktoria arrived in fifth place with a seven-point lead over sixth place - and confirmed this strong season performance on the field as well.
A close game – Grincenco strikes
The match started off evenly. Both teams felt each other out, looked to push forward, and created their first scoring chances. After about twenty minutes, Turbine gradually took control, won more second balls, and put Viktoria under pressure more often.
The Berliners, however, held their ground defensively - and then struck with clinical precision. After several rebounds in the penalty area, Alisa Grincenco reacted quickest and slotted the ball low into the bottom left corner in the 27th minute to take the lead.
Potsdam responded promptly, creating further chances and putting Viktoria under pressure, particularly from set pieces. A free kick in the 32nd minute sailed just over the crossbar. Overall, Turbine had the better of the play during this phase, but Viktoria took the lead into halftime.
Joker Abu Sabbah strikes quickly
The coaching staff made two substitutions right at the start of the second half: Sarah Abu Sabbah and Henrike Sahlmann came on for Maja Wasiak and Trinity Künzel - and Abu Sabbah, in particular, didn’t take long to make an impact.
Following a free kick by Alisa Grincenco, the forward rose high in the 53rd minute and headed the ball into the far corner to make it 2–0. A perfect start to the second half for Viktoria.
With the lead behind them, the team from Lichterfelde regained control of the match. While clear scoring chances were few and far between for both sides, Viktoria defended confidently and allowed hardly any clear opportunities. The match lost some momentum in the closing stages, with no major highlights to speak of.
Shortly before the end, there was an emotional moment: Gina Schüller, who will be leaving the club at the end of the season, was substituted to applause. Jolina Zamorano came on in her place.
Fifth place and the best defense in the league
In the end, FC Viktoria Berlin secured a well-deserved 2-0 away win and a strong finish to the season. With this victory, our team ends the season in fifth place in the standings - seven points ahead of sixth place. What’s particularly impressive is that Viktoria has the best defense in the league this season.
Thank you to all the fans, supporters, and everyone involved for your tremendous support throughout the season!
