Cold, Control, No Reward – Viktoria Narrowly Defeated Despite Dominance

Once again, freezing temperatures at the Olympiapark, a sluggish start – and in the end a match that feels far more bitter for FC Viktoria Berlin than the scoreline alone suggests. Despite clear superiority in play and a strong second half, Viktoria suffer an unfortunate 0–1 defeat against Ingolstadt.

Frozen start at the Olympiapark

At our temporary home venue in the Olympiapark, both teams initially needed time to find their way into the game. The extreme cold (-8°C) was not only noticeable in the stands but also on the pitch: low tempo, few attacking moves, hardly any shots on goal. After the uneventful opening phase, Ingolstadt grew into the match mainly through set pieces.

Free kick puts Viktoria behind

The key moment of the first half came in the 33rd minute: a direct free kick from around 16 metres by Emma Kusch dipped perfectly over the wall into the far corner – unstoppable, 0–1. Shortly afterwards, goalkeeper Wagner kept Viktoria in the game with a strong one-on-one save to prevent a larger deficit. Viktoria went into the break trailing by a narrow margin.

Viktoria take over – chances go begging

After the restart, FC Viktoria Berlin came out much more actively. A double substitution in the 58th minute injected fresh energy: Nina Ehegötz replaced Grincenco, Leyila Aydin came on for Yavuz – and immediately there was more drive going forward.

The following spell clearly belonged to Viktoria, and the best chance to equalise fell to substitute Aydin herself. After a brilliant through ball from Ehegötz, she found herself free about seven metres from goal but placed her shot just inches wide of the far post. A moment that summed up the afternoon.

While Viktoria continued to push, Ingolstadt remained dangerous on the counter. Laura Casanovas Diaz was repeatedly on hand, winning crucial running duels – including against Kömm – and keeping the match alive. Further substitutions late on (73rd, 83rd minute) were meant to force a lucky punch, but the ball simply would not go in. Just before full time, Stöckmann curled a free kick narrowly wide – and that was that.

Conclusion

An unfortunate 0–1 defeat in bitterly cold conditions at the Olympiapark. A wonder free kick made the difference, while FC Viktoria Berlin failed to reward themselves during their strongest spell in the second half. The performance was right, the result was not – and that is something to build on. Viktoria remain fifth in the table.
