For a long time, Viktoria had to fight against a defeat - but then Captain Ehegötz saved the day with the last action of the match.

What a day at Lichterfelde Stadium: Under bright sunshine, 717 spectators watched an intense match between FC Viktoria Berlin and 1. FSV Mainz 05, which was dominated by tackles and fouls. There was no shortage of chances in the opening minutes, however, both for our Viktoria team - for example, through Sarah Abu Sabbah (8') - and for Mainz (14').

Intense, balanced match

In contrast to the first two opponents, however, Mainz did not start with as high a pressing game as Andernach or Ingolstadt. This resulted in an evenly matched game, from which our FCV gained more possession after a good twenty minutes. Abu Sabbah (20'), Maya Hahn (22'), Pia Metzker (26', 38') and, above all, captain Nina Ehegötz (25', 33', 35') pushed forward well – but the final move often failed, and Mainz's defense was too solid.

Mainz, for their part, caused alarm mainly through Emma Junold, who aimed at the sky-blue goal several times but also missed (39', 43'). Shortly before halftime, Mainz grew stronger, but Metzker and goalkeeper Michèle Tschudin cleared the danger.

Mainz came out of the break with pressure

The 05ers came out of the break with two substitutions - and significantly more energy going forward. The first chance came immediately after the restart, and Mainz continued to apply pressure. Chiara Bouziane flew past a cross from the left (57'), but shortly afterwards the ball hit the back of the net. Substitute Heiðrún Sigurðardóttir converted confidently from close range, slotting the ball into the far left corner (60'). 0-1 with half an hour left to play!

And Viktoria wanted to make the most of it: Immediately after the restart, substitute Kim Urbanek hit the back of an opponent (62'), then sent the ball over the bar shortly afterwards (65') and shot into the arms of Mainz goalkeeper Mamiko Matsumoto on her third attempt (70'). Leyila Aydin had also shot wide of the goal earlier (66').

Last-minute equalizer!

Time was running out for our Viktoria team, the crowd was getting more and more nervous, and Mainz simply tightened up their defense with every attack. And then... in stoppage time, a Mainz defender missed the ball, Ehegötz was on hand and shot the ball into the goal. 1-1 with the last action, point won!

With our second point in the third game, we are currently in 11th place in the table, the first non-relegation spot - but it's still too early to look at the table with any certainty. The hunt for points continues in the south: Next week, on September 14, we travel to Stuttgart to face VfB. Kickoff is at 2 p.m., but if you can't be at the stadium, no problem! The game will be streamed live on Leagues.
