In the Spotlight: Kim Urbanek!

In the Spotlight, you'll get to know one of my wonderful teammates a little better – as always. This time, it's all about my roommate and our number 16: Kim Urbanek.

Kim has been with FC Viktoria Berlin since 2023 – and has known our club almost from the very beginning.Fifth season, second in the 2. Liga, and what a start. Read on to find out how she's experiencing it all!

Kim, you had to take months off due to a meniscus injury and then came straight back in the very first league game against Hoffenheim II. What did that comeback feel like?

K I It was actually a bit of a surprise for me to get playing time right in the first league game. That made the joy even greater when I was finally back on the pitch. After such a long break, I really savoured that moment and was so happy to be properly back. Feeling that trust and being brought on straight away meant a lot to me. After so many months out, it was just a really beautiful and special moment.

In the DFB-Pocal against Warbeyen, you came on as a substitute and scored the 3:1 winner after just 10 minutes. What does it take to be ready in a moment like that?

K I I do think you can take something positive from an injury. You have a lot of time to work on your weaknesses, but also to remind yourself of your strengths and what you can rely on. It's also a phase where you learn to trust your body and yourself again.

And I think that's exactly what helps in a moment like that: having confidence, staying focused on bringing out your strengths and helping the team. But honestly, right now I'm just incredibly happy to be back on the pitch. I'm trying to enjoy it, have fun and just play my game again. The fact that it worked out with the winning goal straight away made it all the sweeter.

This is your fifth season at Viktoria – one of the most experienced players at the club ;) You still remember the Regionalliga days, and now we're in our second year in the 2. Liga. What's different this season compared to last year – on the pitch and in your head?

K I I've actually been part of Viktoria for a while now and get to experience the club's development up close. So much has happened and grown over the past few years – and with that development, your own ambitions and expectations of yourself grow too.

Especially in our second season in the 2. Liga, you can feel that things have changed. Last year, a lot was new: the league, the opponents, the pace and the intensity. By now, we know the league better, we know what to expect, and we go into games with more confidence and a greater sense of ease.

At the same time, the standards have risen: we don't just want to keep up, we want to take the next step and reach our goals. For me, that means bringing in my experience while continuing to work on myself. I can read a lot of situations better now and draw on the lessons of the past few years. But there are always things to improve on. It's exactly that drive to keep developing and growing as a team that makes this journey so exciting for me.
