On Sunday, FC Viktoria Berlin travelled to Jena for the last away match of the season, facing the U20 team of FC Carl-Zeiss Jena. Alongside this special occasion, it was also a top match: Although the teams were separated by ten points, there was only one place between them in the table.
Fast Start in Jena
The game was tight for a long time—at least in terms of the scoreline. After Nina Ehegötz put Viktoria ahead with a header (14th minute), it took less than five minutes for Jena II to equalize through Melina Mehler (18th minute). Just four minutes later, our goalkeeper Inga Buchholz made a crucial save as Jena II launched another attack.
With the substitution of Eunice Beckmann and the start of the second half, Viktoria began to dominate the chances. Shot after shot went towards the Jena goal, but FC Viktoria repeatedly found herself denied by the impressive goalkeeper Mailin Wichmann (e.g., in the 52nd, 75th, and 81st minutes).
Künzel The Comeback Queen.
The breakthrough came shortly before the end, thanks to a player we hadn’t seen on the pitch for far too long! 350 days after her ACL injury, Trinity Künzel made the perfect comeback. Substituted in at the 75th minute, she scored the decisive 2-1 goal from the centre of the box, securing Viktoria all three points. Welcome back, Trinity!
In the following weeks, FC Viktoria will only have home games left. After facing their closest rivals in the table, Viktoria will host the bottom team Berolina Mitte at the Stadion Lichterfelde on Sunday, May 12th. Just a week later, it’s the Berlin Cup final against Union Berlin. We’re looking forward to your support! Tickets are available here.
