Despite a strong performance, FC Viktoria Berlin couldn’t find the back of the net against Bundesliga newcomers Turbine Potsdam. A 0-2 loss in the second round of the DFB-Cup means the team misses out on a spot in the Round of 16.
It was a big spectacle on Sunday afternoon at Stadion Lichterfelde. Just like two years ago, 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam visited for the second round of the DFB-Cup. Back then, our “Himmelblauen” lost in a penalty shootout, and this 2024/25 season encounter would be just as tight.
However, the start was less than ideal. The visitors from Potsdam took an early lead after just three minutes. Irena Kuznezov pushed the ball over the line after a free kick (3'). FC Viktoria Berlin didn’t let it rattle them and immediately switched to attack mode. Louise Trapp’s shot was blocked for a corner, where Turbine goalkeeper Lesley Lergenmüller made a mistake, but Nina Ehegötz shot went wide.
FC Viktoria Berlin Equal to National Division Team Potsdam
Viktoria gradually took more control of the game, especially through Trapp, who repeatedly found space down the left, but Turbine’s defence remained solid, cutting out attacks before they reached the final third. FC Viktoria Berlin did manage to put the ball in the net, but Henrike Sahlmann’s goal was ruled offside (13'). A little later, Kim Urbanek scored, but once again, referee Celina Böhm disallowed the equaliser (19').
The match developed into a tight contest. There was hardly any visible difference between the Region League and National League players. While FC Viktoria Berlin created danger through the impressive Trapp, FC Viktoria’s goalkeeper Michele Tschudin also had to make some key saves, including a stop against Laura Lindner (12'). Valentina Limani missed doubling the lead for Potsdam (30').
After the half-time break, FC Viktoria Berlin came out with great energy. Sahlmann’s powerful shot went just wide (47'), and Trapp came close with a shot that touched the top of the crossbar (51').
Luck, Efficiency, and Set Pieces on Potsdam’s Side
Potsdam defended well but needed a bit of luck and another set piece to extend their lead. After a free kick, the ball bounced off several heads and feet before ending up in FC Viktoria Berlin’s net, with Mia Schmid appearing to get the final touch (61').
Down 0-2, but FC Viktoria Berlin didn’t give up. Urbanek tried a long-range effort (65'), and in the final minutes, she had two more chances (83', 86'), but efficiency wasn’t on our side. The effects of the hot weather and the difference between first and third division teams became more evident in the second half, and FC Viktoria Berlin also felt frustrated by several decisions from the refereeing team. Despite a strong showing, it was the end of our journey in this year’s DFB-Cup in the second round.
Now, the focus shifts to the Regional League Northeast. On Sunday, 15th September, we’ll face Union Berlin’s U23 team on matchday three at 1 PM. Come in numbers and support the team for their third win of the season!
