With a clear focus back on the pitch: Captain Nina Ehegötz on the season so far, the second half of the 2. Bundesliga and her contract extension

After an intense first half of the season in the 2. Bundesliga – the first second-division season after promotion in the summer – the second half of the season has now begun for our team. With the 1–0 win against Borussia Mönchengladbach and the narrow 0–1 defeat against FC Ingolstadt, the first competitive matches of the new year have already been played.

Tomorrow, on Sunday, the 2. Bundesliga continues with the first important away match of 2026. Sitting fifth in the table, we travel to face the fourth-placed women of FSV Mainz 05. In the interview, captain Nina Ehegötz talks about the highs and lows of the first half of the season, the importance of the winter training camp, the goals for the second half of the season and her own contract extension.

First of all, Nina, how are you doing at the moment? At the end of the year you had to undergo a long-planned procedure on your knee and missed the matches against Potsdam and Andernach. Last Sunday, you made your comeback against Ingolstadt.

I’m doing well, thank you! After the operation in December, everything went according to plan and I made good progress quickly. Of course, I was impatient and wanted to be back on the pitch with the team as soon as possible. That made it all the nicer to return fully to team training already in January. My knee is currently doing very well and I’m feeling positive about being able to play the second half of the season pain-free and without any problems.

The first half of the season in the 2. Bundesliga is done. What is your overall assessment of the first half of the season in the new league?

Overall, I would say that the first half of the season was positive for us as a newly promoted team. We needed some time to find our rhythm. But that is completely normal with many new players and a new league. We first had to get used to the new demands, but overall we found our way together well.

I think our performances were good in many matches, but especially at the beginning of the season we often came away with draws, even though more would have been possible. There were still some fluctuations over the course of the first half of the season. In phases where things were going well, a weaker match or a defeat would sometimes follow. There was still a lack of consistency.

That made it all the nicer that before the winter break we played a strong match against Andernach and finished with a convincing win. That was a really good way to end the year and gave all of us a lot of confidence going into the second half of the season.

Was there a highlight besides the results that has stayed with you in particular?

As a team, clearly the match against Andernach, even though I could only watch from the sidelines myself. The way we played there, that energy on the pitch and on the bench, that feeling of unity – it was truly contagious.

My personal highlight was the DFB Cup match against Frankfurt in September in front of almost 3,000 fans in Lichterfelde. Even though we lost, I felt that there might have been even more in it. We really troubled the Frankfurt team, and it was incredibly fun to play against a top team from the 1st division. I hope for more of that in the future.

To prepare for the second half of the season, the whole team went to a training camp in Malta in mid-January. What were the key focuses there?

We were able to work specifically on our tactics, play two matches and overall take a great deal from it. The week helped us a lot. We had excellent conditions with really good pitches where it’s simply fun to play football.

At the same time, the time off the pitch was also extremely valuable. Our mental coaches Selina and Billa were there as well, and the joint sessions brought us even closer together as a team. On top of that, there were shared activities and game nights. The mix of intense work on the pitch and time together off it is what makes a training camp special and definitely moves us forward for the season.

What have you set yourselves as a team for the second half of the season?

Above all, we want to reward ourselves for everything we all put in. That means, for example, being more clinical in front of goal and not conceding such simple goals. It’s important to consistently bring a certain level of energy onto the pitch. These are exactly the points we’re working on intensively. In the first two matches of 2026, we’ve managed that in parts and not yet in others. But we’re all very self-critical and are determined to improve from match to match.

As captain, you extended your contract at the end of January as the first player to do so. What was decisive for you in continuing on this shared path?

I’ve been able to be part of the development here over the past three and a half years, and I’m simply impressed by how much passion and appreciation go into working every single day to make us better as a team and as a club. It’s incredibly fun to be out on the pitch every day with my teammates and the staff, to grow together and share so many special moments. I’m very happy and proud to continue on this path and to help take FC Viktoria Berlin further upwards.

One final question: what defines our team?

What defines our team above all is the will we show on the pitch: the desire to win, to go into every tackle and to keep going no matter what. Even when we fall behind, we often come back. That’s a big strength of ours.

That same intensity exists off the pitch as well, whether during a round of Werewolf or at a team evening. We have a very high level of energy within the team, and it’s simply a lot of fun to be together with everyone, no matter where we are at the moment.

I’m really looking forward to the future with this special team!

The problems will grow in number and complexity very rapidly. Huge hammers swung in a round motion across narrow pathways. moto x3m
